The short version
- Jellyfin describes itself as "The Free Software Media System" and says you can stream "from your own server, with no strings attached". It also notes: "We do not run servers for users." (jellyfin.org)
- Plex says on its plans page that it's "totally free to download the Plex software, set up your server, and start streaming to any device on your local network." Remote streaming needs a paid pass (details below).
Remote streaming: the key difference (Plex plans page, checked 2026-10-24)
According to plex.tv/plans:
- To stream remotely "from any server you have access to, you'll need a Remote Watch Pass or a Plex Pass."
- Remote Watch Pass: lets you stream personal content remotely from any Plex Media Server you have access to. "That's all."
- Plex Pass: "Includes remote streaming for all users, Hardware Transcoding, Downloads, Skip Intro & Credits, and more." If the server admin has an active Plex Pass, anyone using that server can stream remotely.
- In both cases, Remote Access has to be set up on the Plex Media Server.
Prices (USD, from Plex's own pages, checked 2026-10-24; Plex notes "Exact pricing in other currencies may vary"):
- Plex Pass: $6.99/month or $69.99/year (set on 29 April 2025 and unchanged since, per Plex's 2025 updates post and lifetime pricing post). Lifetime: $749.99 since 1 July 2026 (previously $249.99). Plex also introduced a 5-Year recurring Plex Pass at $249.99.
- Remote Watch Pass: regular list price $2.99/month or $29.99/year (the plans page FAQ; the $1.99/$19.99 introductory prices applied only to billing cycles before 1 June 2026).
The remote-streaming requirement started on 29 April 2025: "To stream remotely starting on April 29, 2025, you will need a Remote Watch Pass or Plex Pass subscription on your account or the admin of the Plex Media Server from which you stream will need a Plex Pass subscription" (Plex blog). A 29 April 2026 update to that post extended the requirement to more apps and platforms (e.g. Fire TV, smart TVs, game consoles).
Caution: Plex prices and plans have changed several times since 2025. Check plex.tv on the day you decide.

Which should you pick? (our judgment)
- If you mainly watch at home, the official pages say both are free for that.
- If friends or family stream from your server remotely, that's where Plex needs a paid pass, and where Jellyfin has no paid tier.
- Before committing, test each app on the devices you actually use. We haven't compared client apps.
